I’ve had the opportunity to photograph several interiors designed by Chuck Arbuckle, an interior designer in Portland OR. Photographing interiors is very technical because I need to take a room which is designed to be experienced in 3 dimensions and bring out its beauty in a 2 dimensional medium. We always bring our full compliment of lighting equipment to get these jobs done. Chuck is an amazing designer and the pressure is always on to capture what he creates.

My First Published Photograph
A few weeks ago I was invited to speak to the student staff of Clark College’s newspaper The Independent. I prepared a presentation on my iPad using the Keynote app and displayed the presentation on their projector. As part of the presentation I thought it would be cool to show them my first published photo. It was published in a newspaper and I made a whopping $15 (over 25 years ago!). The photo below shows the yellowing newspaper clipping.

Classical Vocalist – Jordan Scott
Jordan is a classical vocalist who is working towards his degree in vocal performance and education. He also happens to be one of my two sons. He needed some new photos as it is always important for models, actors, musicians, and business people to keep their head shots up to date. He had a limited amount of time so we put together a quick shoot. Below are two of my favorites.

Beauty Head Shot With Brittany
Brittany was in need of some updated images for her portfolio. She is a Portland/Vancouver area make-up artist that I have worked with on several occasions and she is quite good at her craft. For this shoot she decided to double as our model. For this shot I decided to stray from my usual beauty lighting decided to use an umbrella to chisel Brit’s features a bit.

Rap Artist – Bryan West
We had a very quick shoot with rapper Bryan West. We had planned to shoot outdoors while he was in town (Vancouver WA) visiting his mother but between my schedule and the rainy weather, it didn’t work out. He leaves tomorrow to make it to his weekend shows so we put together a quick set-up and got him enough photos to last him until he returns to Vancouver in the summer.

Assignment From My Wife
Tammy was applying for her Clinical Ladder Level III. It was quite a lot of work for her so when she asked if I would create an image for the cover I was pretty excited to get started on it. She wanted a photo that showed the comfortable treatment setting that is provided for her patients. Her unit is state of the art but is also very warm and inviting. In many hospitals, outpatient oncology patients are treated in one large room. This unit has all private rooms.
I used two speed lights to light the room.

Cagers Basketball Academy Brochure
I got a call from a basketball coach that I’ve known for a few years. I met him when he coached at a local high school. He is now running the successful Cagers Basketball Academy in Vancouver, WA. Greg needed photos produced for his brochure and website. One of the programs he offers utilizes Basketball Strength Shoes. New Equipment
Just before the holidays we purchased some new equipment. The lens and camera body just sat in the camera case because we hadn’t scheduled any shoots until after the new year. I received an ice ball tray as a gift from Maker’s Mark Bourbon. Jordan and I made the ice balls and added one to a glass of Maker’s Mark. We decided to check the high ISO capability of the new Nikon D7000 camera body. The shot below was created with the new 80-200/2.8 lens and D7000 body. Excellent results!
Unusual Venue
I followed the Skyview Storm basketball team to the Rose Garden to photograph their game against the Prairie Falcons. This was quite a venue to play a regular season high school game at. Many thanks to the Portland Trailblazers for giving the players a taste of what it is like to play in the Rose Garden. I’m sure they will always remember it!
